Stuttering in Children

Many children go through a period of normal disfluency between ages 2-5, when their language is developing faster than their motor speech system can keep up. But for about 1% of children, stuttering persists and becomes a longer-term challenge that benefits from therapy.

What Is Stuttering?

Stuttering is a speech fluency disorder characterized by repetitions ('b-b-ball'), prolongations ('ssssnake'), and blocks (getting stuck on a sound with no airflow). It can be accompanied by physical tension, eye blinking, or avoidance of certain words or situations.

Signs to Watch For

  • Repeating sounds, syllables, or words ('b-b-ball,' 'I-I-I want')
  • Prolonging sounds ('sssssnake')
  • Blocks — getting stuck with mouth open but no sound
  • Visible tension or struggle when speaking
  • Avoidance of certain words or speaking situations
  • Eye blinking, head jerking, or other secondary behaviors
  • Awareness or frustration about speaking difficulty

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my child outgrow stuttering?

About 75-80% of children who stutter do recover naturally, typically by age 5-6. However, an SLP evaluation is recommended if stuttering lasts longer than 6 months, shows tension or avoidance, or causes frustration.

Should I finish my child's sentences when they stutter?

No. Give your child time to finish their thought. Maintain eye contact, listen patiently, and speak slowly yourself. Don't say 'slow down,' 'take a breath,' or 'start over' — these increase pressure and make stuttering worse.
