Your mother-in-law says it kindly, which somehow makes it worse. "It's all that iPad, isn't it." Then a nurse asks how many hours a day and writes the number down without comment. Then at 11pm you type the question into your phone, alone, and the internet hands you nine hundred articles all answering something slightly different.
Two separate questions are mashed together in that search box, and both deserve a straight answer.
The first is whether screens caused your child's autism. The second is what screen use is doing to their language right now. Different questions, different answers, and the guilt attached to the first one stops most parents ever getting a useful answer to the second.
Does screen time cause autism?
No. Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference with a substantial genetic contribution, and the processes involved begin before a child is born — long before any child has held a tablet. No amount of screen time creates autism, and nothing you put on at 6am so you could shower was the cause.
It is worth knowing why the myth is sticky. Studies do sometimes find an association between higher screen use and autism diagnosis, and an association is not a direction. Two readings are more likely than causation: autistic children often gravitate towards screens precisely because screens are predictable, repeatable and under their control in a way that people are not, and families of children who are hard to settle end up using screens more because it is the thing that works at 6pm on a Wednesday. In both, the differences came first and the screen use followed.
Put the guilt down. It has been doing nothing useful for you and it is in the way of the second question, which is the one worth your attention.
The mechanism that actually matters is displacement
Here is the honest version of what research on young children's language suggests: the problem with screens is mostly not what is on them. It is what they replace.
Language grows out of back-and-forth. A child does something, an adult responds to that specific thing, the child responds to the response. That loop is where vocabulary and grammar get built, and it needs a responsive human on the other end. Every published set of milestones describes language as something that develops in interaction — the NIDCD's overview of speech and language development frames it that way, and so does every clinician you will meet.
A screen playing to a child alone in a room supplies no loop. It talks, and nothing the child does changes what happens next. It is the missing loop rather than the glowing rectangle that matters.
Which reframes the question. Hours are a poor measure. What you want to know is what those hours displaced. An hour of television in a house where the rest of the day is full of narrated bath times, shared books and unhurried back-and-forth is doing something very different from an hour in a house where it is the fourth hour and nobody has spoken to the child since lunch. Same hour, different arithmetic.
Screens displace things other than talking, too — sleep, movement, boredom, the messy free play where a lot of communication happens. Sleep especially, because a tired child communicates worse at everything.
Co-viewing changes the maths
If displacement is the mechanism, the fix is not primarily subtraction. It is putting the loop back.
Sit down. Say things. That sounds too simple to be the answer and it is very close to being the answer. A child watching a programme with an adult who comments, points, pauses and responds is having a conversation with a shared topic, and the shared topic does useful work.
Actual things to say, out loud, while the programme is running:
Paediatric guidance generally recommends very limited screen use under two and modest limits in the preschool years, and it consistently emphasises watching together rather than alone. That second half gets dropped in every retelling, and it carries most of the effect.
Three different things are being counted as one
"Screen time" as a category treats a passive cartoon, a practice activity and a communication device as the same substance because they arrive on the same piece of glass. Rolling them into one number produces bad decisions.

The middle row is where we have an interest, so let us be direct about it.

AAC is not screen time and should never be counted as it
This is the point almost nobody makes, and it matters more than everything above.
If your child uses an app or device to communicate — a symbol grid, a speech-generating app, a text system — that is not screen use. It is their voice. Counting it in a screen time total is like counting the hours a child spends talking, and limiting it is like telling them they have used up their words for today.

Being straight about the edges: research on young children, screens and language is mostly observational, which makes causation hard to pin down in either direction. Newer interactive formats are far less studied than television. And almost none of this work has been done specifically with autistic children, so recommendations built around a different population are being applied to yours by extension.
Anyone telling you the science here is settled is overselling. What is well supported is the principle underneath: responsive interaction builds language, and things that crowd it out are worth watching.
FAQ
My autistic child learned words from a tablet. Does that count?
Yes, and plenty of families report exactly this. Words learned from a screen tend to stay tied to the screen unless somebody brings them into life, so take the word into the room — use it at dinner, in the bath, in the car, until it belongs to the world and not the app.
Should I cut screens entirely to help speech?
Very rarely the right call, and a sudden removal often costs you more in regulation than you gain in language. Redistribute rather than eliminate. Replace one hour with an adult, and see what changes over a month.
Is it bad that my child only wants the same episode over and over?
No. Repetition is how a lot of children get comfortable enough to actually process something, and a memorised episode is a shared script you can both use. Join in rather than rotating the playlist.
The school counts my child's communication device in their screen limit. What do I say?
Say that it is their communication system, not a screen, and ask for that to be written into the plan rather than agreed verbally. Getting it on paper is what makes it survive a change of staff.
